The aftermath of the Communion controversy at Northampton and the subsequent dismissal of Jonathan Edwards from the pastorate of the church left him uncertain about where he should go and how he should continue his ministry. But his increasing interest in missionary activity and his affiliation with the International Missionary Union led him to look to the possibility of being a missionary pastor himself. In addition, his brief friendship with David Brainerd had served to inflame his heart even more for missions, and so he believed that he had been called by the Lord to Stockbridge, an English outpost on the frontier in the mountains of western Massachusetts. There Edwards applied himself to reaching the Indians who lived in that area.
