In the most painful episode of his life, Jonathan Edwards was dismissed from his position as pastor of the church in Northampton after more than 23 years of ministry among the people there. In the true spirit of the Protestant Reformers before him, Edwards refused to yield on the ground of what were called his "principles." Those views regarding who was qualified for access to the Lord's Supper made Edwards a target for all those who were disaffected with his ministry, and opened the way for them to plot his removal. When other ministers would not protect Edwards from the carnal maneuvering of his opponents, the result was certain. But Edwards rested in the confidence that his life was in the hands of the Lord.
