The First Thing Delivered

1 Corinthians 15:3, “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.”

Christ’s death for all our sins is the most basic and fundamental truth of the everlasting Gospel. That it is primary is seen in the fact that Paul says it is the first thing that he delivered unto sinners. Christ’s death is first. In fact, it is last too, it is everything, it is the heart of the matter.

It was because of this centrality of the cross that Paul said, “I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2).

Martin Luther grasped the centrality of this truth when he boldly proclaimed, “I see nothing in Scripture except Christ Crucified.”

Stay near Christ’s cross, never let the work of Calvary fade in your mind.

"There is no tribunal so magnificent, no throne so stately, no show of triumph so distinguished, no chariot so elevated, as is the gibbet on which Christ has subdued death and the devil" (John Calvin).

“Calvary preaching, Calvary theology, Calvary books, Calvary sermons! These are the things we want. And in proportion as we have Calvary exalted and Christ magnified, the gospel is preached” (C. H. Spurgeon).
