Forget Not the Grace of God

Isaiah 51:1, “Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.”

Here the Lord reminds His people where He found them. How wretched was our state by nature! We were in a hard, low, unclean and dark condition when Jesus found us. How miserable was that hole of the pit. Matthew Henry said, “the consideration of this should fill us with low thoughts of ourselves and high thoughts of divine grace. Those that are now advanced would do well to remember how low they began.”

John Newton said, “10th of March is a day much to be remembered by me; and I have never allowed it to pass unnoticed since the year 1748. For on that day the Lord came from on high and delivered me out of deep waters.” He is referring to his conversion in the midst of a storm at sea. From that day he appreciated the “amazing grace” of God. He was a remarkably humble man, never for one moment forgetting the pit from which the Lord saved him.

“Whoever is truly humbled — will not be easily angry, nor harsh or critical of others. He will be compassionate and tender to the infirmities of his fellow-sinners, knowing that if there is a difference — it is grace alone which has made it! He knows that he has the seeds of every evil in his own heart. And under all trials and afflictions — he will look to the hand of the Lord, and lay his mouth in the dust, acknowledging that he suffers much less than his iniquities have deserved.” (John Newton).
