The inspired Apostle placed great stress on the danger of partaking of the Lord's Supper unworthily. Obviously, then, it is a matter of great importance to establish what it means to partake of the Lord's Supper worthily. Clearly, it is to partake by faith without consciousness of unconfessed sin. Only by faith in Christ is any believer able to appreciate the significance of that which the symbols employed in the Lord's Supper represent. Only by faith can believers preach the Lord's death. Only by faith can believers partake with the consciousness that Christ is going to come again. Only by faith can they remember Christ in a true and thoughtful manner. Without such faith, the exercise of partaking of the elements of the Lord's Table descends into a meaningless ritual and condemns the participant to the judgment of God.
