The Lord Jesus Christ engaged in the most arduous and agonizing work on the cross. He worked with a definite purpose in view--to deliver His people from their sins, to justify them through His blood. His travail, as Isaiah described it, was for the purpose of securing the salvation of a vast multitude of sinners. Yet, at the same time, the text indicates that the travail in which Christ engaged on the cross was not to secure the salvation of every single person in all of history. Yet, our Lord died on the cross to put away sin by His own sacrifice. The iniquity of all of His people was laid on His sacred Head, and He bore that load in His own body. He undertook it for the joy of bringing His people home to glory. Such joy is what we remember when we come to the Lord's Table.
