According to the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, the purpose for the Lord's Supper is that of a public testimony not only to the physical and historical truth of Christ's death but also to the reality of each believer's trust in the benefits of Christ's death. The Savior knew that His followers would be tempted to drift away from the bedrock truth of His death on the cross and wanted them to have a visible remembrance of that death on a frequent basis. The Lord was also making it plain that such a remembrance was to be observed in every generation of the Lord's people until the return of Christ. Obviously, the observance of the Lord's Table was to be in the context of the church, and so the Lord's words meant that the church was to continue in the world until the return of Christ.
