The double transfer that took place at Calvary was the foundation of the salvation of Christ's people. There the guilt of Christ's people was judged to be Christ's and God the Father punished Christ on that account. But in addition, the obedience of Christ to the law, keeping it in every detail, was judged to be the obedience of Christ's people and they are admitted to the presence of God strictly on the basis of that double transfer, sometimes called double imputation. The Lord's Table is a reminder of the contrast between guilt and innocence that was on display at the cross.
