Not even the Roman soldiers, who had attended many crucifixions, could avoid noticing that there was a definite difference in the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. The atmosphere among the spectators was more highly charged than was usually the case. The bitter invective that was hurled at Jesus had a sharply personal tone to it, and nothing that the Savior suffered on the cross could elicit any kind of sympathy from the people watching Him there. But at the same time, the Lord did not respond in kind. Instead, he displayed the love that had impelled Him to that very hour. That compassion for His people led Him, in submission to the Father, to give Himself as a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice.
