After stating that "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble", James says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Pride was the source of their "fightings and wars", their envy, and their cravings for the things of the world. Grace was desperately needed in their lives.
But God has ordained that His grace comes to His people as they make use of the means of grace. So James says that He gives grace to the humble.
The thing they needed to do was to overcome their hellish pride that lay at the root of their trouble. And, from the human persepctive, the way to do that was by doing two things:
1. Submitting themselves to God 2. Resisting the devil.
