With the stony ground hearer and the thorny ground hearer there is a similarity in that they both receive the seed. But there is also a difference between them otherwise the Lord would not have made the distinction. The distinction I feel is this. The stony ground hearer is a person who accepts the gospel wholeheartedly and seeks to be a Christian but has no real root. He is not grounded in Christ and so fails. The thorny ground hearer is someone who accepts the gospel and in many ways there is more depth than with the stony ground hearer but he is someone who seeks to do the thing that the Lord said was impossible. He tries to serve both God and mammon and so while there seems to be godly fruit in his life for a while there are also thorns. He is the professor who looks as if he is saved but the things of this world choke out the seed of the Word. In the end he is left with nothing but thorns and the thorns speak of the curse of sin. This is a challenging message that should prompt every child of God to examine their hearts.
