The Engraved Palms

Isaiah 49:16, “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.”

Did you ever write on your hand something that you had to do and did not want to forget? If it is on your hand you will see it and you will remember. This is what God means here. The Lord can never forget His people. The Lord is always working with His mighty hands in providence and as He does so He sees his hands and in seeing them He remembers His people. This is why Paul can write, (in Romans 8:28), “we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

This writing is an engraving too. That means that it can never be washed away or wear off. What we write on our hands quickly fades but not the engraving of your name on God’s hand.

This makes us think of the nail-scarred hands of Jesus. You will notice both hands are referred to. If we note something, one hand suffices. But the Lord has both hands engraved. This is solemn! It brings us to the cross. The Saviour said to Thomas “Behold my hands.” He wants us to look at His engraved hands so that our doubts maybe removed. In seeing the marked hands of Jesus, we see His love for His people. Those engravings show the Lord can never forget His people.
