The Key to Direction

Proverbs 3:6, “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

We all have many turns to take and decisions to make. Life lays before us endless choices. It is so easy to go down a wrong path or take a step that leads to some accident or tragedy. The child of God is not to dread life because of these things. We must continue through life taking one step at a time. However, it is essential to go forward in our path everyday in humble dependence on God. We at the very least must acknowledge God in prayer and seek His sovereign direction. This has to be done, “in all thy ways,” in small or great matters, in simple or complicated things, in temporal as well as eternal affairs. We don’t need a personal word for every choice we make, but we do need to show that we always are looking to our Father in Heaven for His kind providence in our path.

The key on the path of daily life is not self reliance; the key is trust in the Lord.

“It is nothing less than self-idolatry to conceive that we can carry on even the ordinary matters of the day without His counsel. He loves to be consulted. Therefore take all thy difficulties to be resolved by Him. Be in the habit of going to Him in the first place— before self-will, self-pleasing, self-wisdom, human friends, convenience, expediency. Before any of these have been consulted go to God at once” (Charles Bridges).
