Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Today is the anniversary of the death of the Swiss Reformer Ulrich Zwingli. He was born a couple of months after Martin Luther. He died on the field in the battle of Kappel in 1531. He was actually murdered. He lay wounded, but when the enemy discovered his identity an officer cut his throat. After the battle, his lifeless body went through a mock trial and his body was quartered and burned, and his ashes were then mixed with dung.

Zwingli loved the Bible and had memorised large portions of his Greek New Testament. He faithfully expounded that word at every opportunity. Five mornings each week at 7 am he would meet with the ministers and theological students of Zurich to preach God’s word to them. He commenced the solemn time with the following prayer.

“Almighty, eternal and merciful God, whose Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, open and illuminate our minds, that we may purely and perfectly understand thy Word and that our lives may be conformed to what we have rightly understood, that in nothing we may be displeasing unto thy majesty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
