The Seed of Self Destruction

Obadiah 1:3, “The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee... “

This is a real danger to every man. Not even the Christian is exempt from this danger. Every heart is as described in Jeremiah 17:9, “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” The seeds of self destruction are within us. In fact our hearts within are often more dangerous than any enemy without.

Luther believed this too, for he said, “I am more afraid of my own heart than of the pope and all his cardinals. I have within me the great pope, Self.”

So as well as being watchful of Satan and his emissaries we especially have to keep watch over our own hearts. As God says, “Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently,” (Deuteronomy 4:9).
