That which believers in Christ can see in the world about them has the potential to plunge them into despair. But their salvation does not rest in that which they can see in a physical sense. They are saved, Paul says, by hope. It is by keeping their spiritual eyes on that which cannot be seen with the physical eyes that the people of God can wait patiently for the coming of the day of glory. Only in that way can they persevere in true happiness when all around them seems to be giving way.
