Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Peter warned the believers of the 1st century concerning the intense spiritual struggle in which they would have to be engaged. Comparing it to the battles against false prophets in the past, battles that not many of those who professed to be the Lord's people were willing to join, Peter urged the believers to exercise great vigilance against the false teachers who had already penetrated the church. Their subtle tactics would mask their devilish motivation and their hatred for Christ. Yet, they would be accepted by the people of the church as sincere believers. It was on that point, Peter said, that the believers would have to exercise great courage. They would have to challenge every subtle suggestion that the church depart from that which the apostles had been preaching. They would have to be willing to denounce by name those who appeared to be very wise and worthy leaders in the church for their subversion of the truth of the Gospel. But Peter wanted the believers to be prepared to stand against the false teachers and to defend the legacy of Christ's atonement for His people.
