The only witnesses to the crucifixion of Christ who were not at liberty to be elsewhere if they had wished were the two thieves who were crucified alongside Jesus. The Gospel narrative indicates that at the first, both thieves joined in the taunting and mockery of the Savior. But in Luke's account, we learn that one of the two came to behold Jesus as the Savior, and that on the cross, that thief called on Jesus to remember him. The response of Jesus was to assure the one thief that he would be with Christ that very day and that from Christ's presence, he would never be parted.
