The believers in Christ were called Christians first in Antioch of Syria. It was a designation that was designed to be derisive, but the believers took it up as a welcome badge of honor. It served as a unifying point for those who came from diverse backgrounds. Some had been raised in Palestine in the heart of the Jewish culture. Others, the Grecians or Hellenized Jews, had grown up, as had Saul of Tarsus, outside of Palestine, and the Jews of Palestine tended to regard them as somehow inferior. Others were Gentiles. When people from these diverse backgrounds came together in the church at Antioch, they were still conscious of that which made them distinct from each other. But with the designation of Christian, they were able to demonstrate that the things that were true of them all, the things that they all had in common, were far more important than anything that would divide them. They each had the same history. This message explores what was true of them all and what is true of Christians to this very time.
