SERMON INFO
This tenth chapter of Proverbs marks the beginning of the second main section of this book of wise sayings from the wise man Solomon, the man whose wisdom came directly from God above.

The first nine chapters are directed towards the youth and the conduct of early years. Repeatedly we read the term 'My son'. Ten times up to chapter 9 these words appear. Then there is a break until the 19th chapter before you come across that term again.

There are other statements which direct these opening chapters particularly to the young, cf. ch 4:1: Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. One commentator said of this opening section: All the most formidable dangers to which this season is exposed and the sins which most easily beset it, are painted with the hand of a master.

Another interesting point to observe, by way of instruction, is that there is usually somewhere in Scripture an illustration of the truth that is taught in the Proverb. In this case we can join together the record we have read of Ahab and the incident with Naboth's vineyard and the words of this text. The actions of Ahab and the outcome with resulted from his pursuit of Naboth's vineyard illustrate vividly for us that the treasures of wickedness do not pay and that it is righteousness alone that delivers from death.

Consider: Sin pays no dividend.
