The people of Judah deluded themselves with the idea that they were in no imminent danger, and that they did not have to concern themselves with turning from their sins. The prophet Jeremiah's grief spilled forth in this poetic and pithy summary of their tragic condition. Their opportunity had passed and still they were not saved. Of how many people must this text be written now? They are already in Hell. Of how many others must it be written at the close of the year? They have heard many Gospel entreaties but still they are not saved. Those who have grown up in the church must take such a text to heart. It is not exposure to the Gospel that saves. Only Christ saves. They must receive Him by faith alone.
