The emphasis of John 1, as a keynote for the entire Gospel, is on the perfect union in the Person of Christ of His distinct divine nature and a distinctly human nature. The Word was made flesh, John the Baptist declared. The identity of the Word was plain from the chapter's opening verses, and it was that same Word, John said, Who was made flesh. There is that about the union of the two distinct natures in the same Person which is full of mystery. We cannot plumb the depths of that reality. But there is something wonderful about it as well. The Incarnation was the key to redemption. Christ had to take unto Himself a true body and a reasonable soul in order to be the perfect substitute for His people, both in life and in death.
