Few aspects of the narrative of the incarnation are as dramatic as the sudden appearance of the multitude of the heavenly host to the shepherds on the hillsides outside Bethlehem. But as impressive as the sight must have been to the shepherds, the narrative pays it little attention, a significant fact in our visually oriented age. The emphasis was on what the angels said when they appeared. There are many eager to focus on that which has to do with the people of the world. But the first thing that the angels said was to draw the attention of the shepherds to God in Heaven. That striking word that they delivered was designed to let the shepherds know, and everyone after them as well, that the birth of Christ was above all else cause for God to be praised and His Name to be exalted.
