This message provides an overview of the second main section of the first chapter and seeks to expound the chapter's theme of Life Inside and Out. Peter was not arguing that it was necessary for professing believers to add their own works to their faith so as to ensure their salvation, though such an interpretation has sometimes been made. He was asserting, like James, that faith is never alone. Peter was saying that the evidence of faith will appear in believers by the development of the life on the inside that will lead to works of kindness and charity on the outside. The lack of such growth in grace leaves no ground for the assurance of salvation. The reality of the calling and election of Christ's people means that they will never fall, and the fruitfulness of their lives is the demonstration of that persevering interest in Christ.
