After three years of drought and severe famine, the shriveled kingdom of Israel groaned under the obstinate religious policy of Ahab and Jezebel. The king laid the blame for the situation on the prophet Elijah, but the prophet responded with the declaration that Ahab and his father's house were to blame in that they had forsaken the commandments of the Lord. The ungodly always seek to blame the godly for calamity when the ungodly are really responsible for the outpouring of divine judgment. Elijah summoned the prophets of the false religion to the great contest on Mt. Carmel. By modern standards of success, Elijah was a miserable failure for he was alone against 850 prophets of Baal and of the groves. But he was standing for the truth of the living God, and by God's grace and power, Elijah won a decisive victory and saw the blessing of reviving rain again in the land.
