Few chapters in the Bible enjoy the kind of recognition attaching to this one. Yet few chapters in the Bible are more often misunderstood and misinterpreted than this one. The translators of the Authorized Version used the word "charity" for the word translated many other places as "love." They made their conscious choice for a definite reason. In this chapter, the love that comes from God is seen in action in the course of the behavior of the people of the church. Paul's argument is clear. The demonstrations of pride and other forms of carnality were clear signs that there was no charity being exercised among the believers in Corinth. Not to have charity, Paul was saying, is to be like a child. He was exhorting believers everywhere to grow up and to put away childish things. To do so means that charity will be the governing truth of the Christian life.
