From the scene when Martin Luther appeared before the Diet of Worms on April 18, 1521 comes the message that shocked many listeners on that occasion. He refused to be corrected on his views from the pronouncements of popes or church councils. He would not consent to be disproved except on the ground of Scripture alone and sound arguments that could be made clearly from Scripture. In so stating, Luther laid the groundwork for the Reformation's message. Only by relying on the Scripture, the inspired revelation of God, could there be any confidence in the message of the Gospel. Many have accused him and those who came after him of making an idol out of the Bible, but Luther's point was that only the authority of that which the Holy Spirit Himself had caused to be written could be the ground for anything that people were to believe concerning salvation.
