The last words written by the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit reveal the character of the man who wrote under the shadow of the sentence of death. In spite of that sentence, Paul did not display any spirit of defeat or despair in this chapter. Instead, he exhorted Timothy concerning the days that would follow, and the nature of the shocking departure from the faith that would confront those who had been trained by the apostles. Paul noted the cases of some who had bitterly disappointed him or bitterly opposed him. But he also pointed to many others who had continued to stand with him in defense of the Gospel. Above all, Paul was rejoicing in the evidence of Christ's presence with him, and the anticipation of the glorious crown that awaited him.
