BLOG ON: SERMON Devilish Claims–Da Vinci Code
Londonderry Free Presbyterian Church
Rev Ian Brown
According to The Da Vinci Code (DVC p.231), Leonardo made the following comments about the New Testament in his "notebook on polemics and speculation":

(i) "Many have made a trade of delusions and false miracles, deceiving the stupid multitude";

(ii) "Blinding ignorance does mislead us. O! Wretched mortals, open your eyes."

However:

(i) The first statement is not about the Bible at all. Ironically, Leonardo made it about alchemists.

His full statement reads: "The false interpreters of nature declare that quicksilver is the common seed of every metal, not remembering that nature varies the seed according to the variety of the things she desires to produce in the world. And many have made a trade of delusions and false miracles, deceiving the stupid multitude."

(ii) Leonardo's second statement also is not about the Bible - nor is it from the "notebook on polemics and speculation" as claimed by Dan Brown.

Rather, it appears in Leonardo's 'Morals' - a group of proverb-like sayings that relate to life in general.

Additionally, the artist's words have been altered in order to make them fit the devious purpose of The Da Vinci Code. The actual statement by Leonardo reads:

"The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions. Folly is the shield of shame, as unreadiness is that of poverty glorified. Blind ignorance misleads us thus and delights with the results of lascivious joys. Because it does not know the true light. Because it does not know what is the true light. Vain splendour takes from us the power of being – behold! for its vain splendour we go into the fire, thus blind ignorance does mislead us. That is, blind ignorance so misleads us that ... [Leonardo deliberately stops this sentence for effect] O! wretched mortals, open your eyes."

Looks like Dan Brown is at his deceptive best again ... .
