The Armoury of Holy Scripture

Song of Songs 4:4 “.. the tower of David builded for an armoury, whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.”

Here Solomon makes an interesting reference to a structure which his father David built. It was a tower of defence which the Lord’s anointed erected for Jerusalem and in which he piled up all kinds of military hardware for the protection of the city. The church has an armoury also, a high tower from which we draw our weapons of defence. The Lord Himself in His love for His church and for her defence against the assault of Satan and the world has provided her with a well stocked and all sufficient armoury. Those weapons are not carnal but spiritual and mighty in opposing the forces of hell. Our armoury is the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures of truth. The Bible is to us as “the tower of David builded for an armoury.” Every saint must enter in and take unto himself the whole armour of God, “that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:13). Our defence is always to be able to say, “it is written.”

Spurgeon said,

“That armoury is to me, at any rate—and I hope it is to each one of you—THE BIBLE... If we want weapons we must come here for them, and here only. Whether we seek the sword of offence or the shield of defence, we must find it within the volume of inspiration. If others have any other storehouse, I confess at once I have none.”
