In the aftermath of his grievous backsliding, King Solomon pondered the way in which his sin had clouded his legacy to the extent that generations to come would not regard him for much except for the way in which he had transgressed the commandments of God. He acknowledged that he had shown himself to be foolish in that, when he was old, he refused to be admonished concerning his conduct, and deliberately defied what he knew to be the Word of the Lord. The vanity of his experience became a tool for him, made that much wiser, to warn others against following his foolish example. Yet there was hope in that Solomon had been rebuked by the Lord and had been brought to see the folly of all that he had done in turning his heart away from the Lord.
