We have this event of Christ's youth, sitting in the temple hearing and asking questions. Luke is using the narrative to prove the truths that are taught in verses 40 and 52. Luke is presenting this story so that we would learn truths concerning the person of Christ.
Details of the story This is not an account of bad parenting or an account of the waywardness of a 12 year old child 1. actions of godly parents They were God-fearing parents (41). 2. age of Jesus He was 12 years old. This is not an accidental detail. This is where bar mitzvah comes from. It means son of the law. You were considered as having entered adulthood. 3. absence of Jesus Family groups traveled together in large groups. Men might have been at the front and women and children at the rear. So it is possible a child could be accidentlly forgotten. Our Lord in his humanity might not have known his parents were looking for him. He certainly did not disobey the fifth commandment. In his deity he knew and for their good he permitted this to happen. 4. answer of Jesus How did you not know I should be about my Father's business?
Lesson from the story 1. the marks of a true humanity Two words prove his humanity - growth He grew in his humanity in terms of his body and soul. He is maturing and becoming a wise young man. Wisdom is fearing God and departing from evil. He grew by asking questions. He asked things he did not know. - grace True humanity depends on the grace of God. He grew because of grace. The attributes of deity were not communicated to his humanity. 2. the marks of a remarkable humanity - sinlessness - self-awareness (49) - responsibility ("must")
