Peter appealed to the historical record as evidence that God knows how to keep the distinction clear between those who trust in Him and those who refuse to do so. God knows how to deal with those whose rebellion against Him overwhelms the people in the world. And God knows how to preserve His people in the midst of trouble and opposition because of their faith in Christ. Peter links three events from the three eras of world history. He says that the apostasy of some angels from Heaven was as much a historical event as the flood that destroyed the old world in which Adam and his descendants had lived. It was as much a historical event as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The message was clear. There would be for every soul either deliverance or final judgment.
