Christ knows the true state of His church. He is the one who walks amongst his people. He is the one who observes and examines and inspects every detail in the assembly of His saints. Christ does not deal with reputations but with realities therefore how we are before Him is all important.
Christ had examined the church at Ephesus and had a message for it. It was a message that related to the heart-breaking truth that it had left its first love. The word ‘left' evidently suggests a spiritual declension. Things were not what they should have been within the church at Ephesus. There had been a change – and not for the good.
The same problem exists with many today.
This message examines:
1. The circumstances of this declension. a. They left their first love despite their solid teaching in the word of God.
b. they left their first love despite their previous service for Christ.
c. they left their first love despite their separation from evil things.
d. they left their first love despite the loyalty they had shown to Christ
2. The character of this spiritual declension.
Leaving our first love is a sin - Christ had urged them to repent.
a. It is a sin against the one we ought to love the most.
b. it is a sin that involves idolatry
c. it is a sin that leads to other sins.
d. it is a sin that is both unreasonable and inexcusable.
3. The consequences of this spiritual declension.
It results in a 'fallen' church.
