In this passage from John 13, we learn about the washing and service of the Lord where there are lessons in this for His people
1. The posture of Christ (John 13:1-5): service John 13:3 - Christ was aware of who he is, that he came from the Father. He is coeternal and coequal with the Father. He knew as he walked upon the earth that he was not just a man, but the God-man (Phil 2:6) John 13:4-5 - He laid aside his garments and dresses as a servant and performs the function as a servant (Phil 2:7). One heresy says Christ emptied himself of deity and took on humanity. What really happened is that the Second Person of the Trinity was united with a true humanity. He emptied himself by becoming a servant who would be obedient to God unto death. He emptied not by subtraction, but by addition - taking the form of a servant. He took the posture of a servant.
2. The practice of Christ (John 13:5-11): washing He practiced a menial task of washing the disciple's feet. He taught them something very important in what he did. This visible lesson has tremendous spiritual implications. The cleaning the Lord talked about was cleansing from sin. He is speaking of the washing of regeneration that we need once for all and the daily washing of water by the Word and Sprit as we go through this sinful world.
3. The pattern of Christ (John 13: 12-17): lessons As the Lord performs this task, he is teaching us that we would promote each other's sanctification and learn to serve others in practical ways. Serving others is the essence of what is to be in Christ.
