When Mary of Bethany used her most valuable possession, an alabaster box of very rare ointment, to anoint the head and feet of the Lord Jesus Christ, His disciples reacted with indignation, following the lead of Judas Iscariot, who complained that her act was wasteful and needless. He argued for what he said was a more practical approach. The ointment should have been sold and the proceeds donated to the poor. But Christ Himself condemned that sentiment and commended Mary's act in such a way that He pointed the way to the path of genuine devotion to Christ. It lies in not holding anything back, but in giving that which is most precious. Christ was teaching that it is not possible to follow the Savior from afar.
