John is given a vision of heaven of a golden altar = it is an altar of incense to offer up the prayers of all saints. This vision parallels with the golden incense altar that was used in the O.T. tabernacle. That one was made of shittim wood overlaid with gold. At that altar a priest offered up incense unto God. That was the work of Zacharias, father of John the Baptist, in the temple.
