These verses take us into the depths of Messiah's anguish of heart on the cross. The Father had laid on Messiah the iniquity of all of Messiah's people and had to inflict the punishment that was appropriate for that iniquity. In these verses, we see Messiah cut off not only from the fellowship of the Father but also from any human fellowship. The loneliness that Messiah suffered in the extreme is a reminder to us of the everlasting loneliness that is one of the most horrifying aspects of Hell. Christ was without anyone to pity Him and without anyone to comfort Him. For His people, He undertook to bear such a punishment so that they could be admitted to the home of the redeemed where there is fellowship and joy.
