This chapter is the final historical reference to the ministry of the prophet Elisha after more than sixty years of serving the Lord. By this time he was ninety years of age and was suffering from some sickness. And when he was dying we are told that King Joash the young king of Israel came to see him. Now that was a remarkable thing in many ways. Kings do not often visit deathbeds and that is particularly so when it comes to the deathbeds of God's servants. And this visit is all the more surprising because Joash was not a particularly good character. The Bible says of him that He did evil in the sight of the Lord. and we are told that he walked in the footsteps of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel sin. But here is the young King and he has come to pay homage and have one last interview with the mighty prophet who in days gone by had done such exploits in Israel. ? It will be a wonderful thing if we come to the end of our lives the way that Elisha did. It is often the case that the deathbed of a person reveals a lot about them. It is when the cold chilly hand of death is felt that the reality of what we rely on is really seen. Whether they are resting on good foundations or not is seen in the face of death. We come now to the time of Elisha's death. There are a number of lessons we can learn from that deathbed.
