In Augustus Toplady's hymn 'Rock Of Ages,' he inserts the line:
'Helpless, look to Thee for grace.'
This was Israel's position in Isaiah 59 – and is the state of every sinner by nature.
This message exalts the sovereignty and sufficiency of God in salvation, tracing:
1. The ABSENCE Of Salvation ...
Two pictures of pollution are sketched in this passage; one by the prophet (vs.2-8), the other by the people themselves (vs.9-15). These pictures reveal the people to be totally depraved, with sin in their mind, mouth and motions.
2. The ACCOMPLISHMENT Of Salvation ...
The Lord, knowing the wickedness and weakness of the people, and aware that they had no intercessor, strode forward and accomplished salvation for His people.
3. The AFTERMATH Of Salvation ...
When the Lord secured salvation for His people, two 'knock-on' results followed:
(a) The Fear of God, (b) The Glory of God.
Nothing will foster a healthy, godly fear like glorying in the sovereign majesty of the Lord in salvation. |
