To achieve these aims, we will look at 7 foundational principles:
1. The principle of authority in God's created world There are various spheres of authority in the world. We have humans over animals, parents over children, husbands over wives, employers over employees. This pattern is then present in the church with elders over the congregation.
2. The principle of accountability in God's people It is the duty of God's people to be accountable to God's authority. God places his authority in the appointment of elders.
3. The principle of the security of God's people God appoints shepherds, or elders, for His flock, the congregation to protect God's people from evil influences in the church.
4. The principle of responsibility of God's leaders Elders have a responsibility in their role. They must have good and godly qualities ad they must rightly care for God's people.
5. The principle of the plurality of God's leaders There are multiple leaders of God's church.
6. The principle of parity of God's leaders The elders are equal with the other elders. There is no hierarchy in the church.
7. The principle of the quality of God's leaders How we proceed in appointing elders can differ. But one thing is absolutely clear. Those who are selected must be qualified. These qualifications are less about gift, and more about character.
