When the disciples asked the Lord about why He spoke to the multitude in parables, His answer was probably surprising to them. The typical modern explanation of His answer makes Him say the opposite of what He actually said. The Lord Jesus Christ made it plain that the parables were in the context of divine judgment on the people to whom they were spoken, and that the judgment was in the context of God's sovereign choice. The disciples were given to understand the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, and the multitudes were not given that understanding. It is a sober warning to all to be careful about the manner in which we hear the Word of God.
