Not many years in recent times have begun with more ominous clouds for the people of God than this year. The situation in the world seems extremely shaky in a whole range of issues. Economic conditions appear very uncertain and there are bound to be those among the people of God who harbor justifiable concerns about the future course of national and international relationships. The church confronts daunting challenges in its mission to pursue the advancement of Christ's kingdom. Those factors, combined with the rigors of individual lives, could lead the people of God to give up in despair. Those to whom Zechariah preached knew the reality of such challenges. But the words of this text present the great ground for hope. When the darkness seems about to fall fully and finally, the prophet's word is that it shall be light. Here is a word of encouragement for the Lord's people at the outset of a year that seems to wear such a foreboding aspect.
