The impressiveness of Joseph in the account of the birth of Jesus Christ was that he always carried out directly every instruction he received as a result of divine revelation. He restrained his tongue to such an extent that only one word he spoke during this period is recorded in Scripture, and that word was the name he was instructed to give to Mary's firstborn son. He called His Name Jesus. There are many words from Mary in Scripture but only one from Joseph. The Holy Spirit emphasized the truth that Joseph, though he was the direct descendant of the royal house from David through Solomon and therefore had the legal right to the throne, never sought deference from others. Instead, humbly and compassionately, he dealt with the situation involving Mary, and took to heart his real calling. He was to protect the child Jesus from the efforts of those sought to destroy Him.
