The Word of God in Deuteronomy proclaimed that anyone who would be hanged would be accursed by God. Those who witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth were able to draw the conclusion that God must have condemned and abandoned Him for Him to end in such a circumstance. The atmosphere of that scene on Calvary was full of vicious attacks on the Son of God as the leaders of the Jews sought to exact every ounce of vengeance possible. But the real condemnation that fell on Christ on Calvary was not the cursing of the people who passed by but the curse of God on account of the sins that Christ undertook to bear in His own body on the cross. That condemnation became as well the source of great blessing for Christ's people in the redemption that He achieved there.
