The union between England and Scotland will reach its three hundredth anniversary in 2007. There is much debate and discussion concerning the union and without exception most if not all of that discussion focuses upon the economics of the union. However, the fact which is overlooked is that the roots of that union go back to the times of the covenanting period in Scotland, and in particular the year 1643. In that year the Solemn League and Covenant was formed between England and Scotland and at its heart was not the economy, but the establishing of the reformed religion, the pure gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the kingdoms of Ireland, England and Scotland. There is most certainly a marked contrast between then and now, as far as the spiritual condition of the nation is concerned. However, the study of those days ought to inspire the people of God, with encouragement and prayer, that what He wrought then He might do again today. This third message on the Scottish Covenanters lifts the subject out of the mere realm of history and applies its truth and significance to our own day and generation. |
