There was trouble in the church at Corinth. This was a very gifted church but it was also a church plagued with divisions, in-fighting, pride, spiritual immaturity, etc.
One of the bones they had to pick with the apostle Paul was that his preaching was too plain...too crude...and he needed to refine his message to make it more appealing to the intellectuals in the city of Corinth.
It is in that context that Paul makes the bold statement of v. 18 about the power that is in the preaching of the cross. In this first part of the message, attention is given to those who disdain the preaching of the cross...those who call it "foolishness".
