SERMON INFO
Today (16 October 2005) marks the 450th anniversary of the martyrdom of Bishops Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley in Oxford on 16 October 1555. Latimer was one of the foremost Protestant preachers of his day. It has been said “Bishops Latimer and Ridley were two of the ablest as well as holiest of the martyrs whose blood was offered as a sacrifice upon the altar of popish bigotry during the reign of Mary.” Latimer, while dying, spoke of a lighting a candle in England that would never go out. If today it has indeed not gone out, sadness fills the souls of those who must admit that it is now little more than a small and flickering flame. But what was Latimer's candle. It is the Word of God of course and what we need in this land is a return to the Word of God.
