BLOG ON: SERMON Calvin: The Glory of God Alone
Londonderry Free Presbyterian Church
Rev Ian Brown
Using some maritime imagery, I have decided to examine the ministry and legacy of the great French Reformer, John Calvin.

The Reformation was a flotilla of chosen vessels, both large and small, that set sail across the seas of heresy and sin, launched an invasion against the forces of Satan, and installed the crimson banners of the crosswork of Jesus Christ on citadel after citadel formerly occupied by the devil’s hordes across Europe.

Though Martin Luther is correctly viewed as a massive figure in the Protestant Reformation, John Calvin, under God, rose to the status of Admiral of the Reformation Fleet.

This is the second in a planned series of four messages on this subject.

It asks the question: "When the Reformation Fleet left port approximately 500 years ago, what was the fundamental principle that drove it along? Or, what was the FLAGSHIP in the Reformation Fleet?"

This was defined as the truth that God, Who has revealed Himself in His Word, is Sovereign over all things and deserves glory and majesty from all things.

Soli Deo Gloria - "The Glory of God alone."

(a) The Glory and Majesty of a Sovereign God – Where John Calvin RECOGNISED this.

Calvinism places God at the centre of everything, including:

(i) Creation
(ii) Redemption.

(b) The Glory and Majesty of a Sovereign God – From Whence John Calvin RECLAIMED this.

Rome had "destroyed the glory of Christ in many ways"; Calvin (and others) were forced into conducting a search to find it.

(c) The Glory and Majesty of a Sovereign God – How John Calvin RELAYED this.

To Calvin, the chief vehicle in proclaiming the Glory of God was through the Word of God. His life was marked by "invincible constancy in the exposition of Scripture."

(d) The Glory and Majesty of a Sovereign God – By What John Calvin REINFORCED this.

By a life of (i) Humility and (ii) Courage.
