Disappointments

Acts 16:6-7, “Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia. After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.”

Paul and Timothy had their desires denied them by God. Clearly, they wanted to go into Asia and Bithynia but God said ‘no’. Disappointment is a fact of life, it is all part of living in this world. However we should not be too concerned about not getting what we want. We ought to be more concerned what God wants for us, for that is surely best of all. Our disappointments are God’s appointments. All things work together for good, even the shut up ways, the closed doors, the losses and discouragements. The truth is the Lord knows better than we do, and His ‘no’ is always merciful, even when it hurts. He is not failing us or being unfaithful when He says ‘no.’ The preacher Rowland Hill said, “We shall have more to do to bless God for what He denies us, than for what He gives us.” So then, if you are suffering from a disappointment, don’t be discouraged, it is because the Lord has something else—something better, in mind.

“There is many a thing which the world calls disappointment, but there is no such a word in the dictionary of faith. What to others are disappointments are to believers intimations of the way of God.” (John Newton)
